Once plentiful in most of North America, the grey, or timber, wolf was first hunted ruthlessly during colonial times by European settlers whose folklore depicted wolves as a threat to livestock and people. Myths and misunderstandings eventually resulted in the extermination of the species from almost all its historic range south of Canada. The grey wolf reached endangered status in the lower 48 states in 1978.
